Porsche has announced that it will be adopting Apple CarPlay for its 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S. It specifically rejected Google's own Android Auto platform, citing one major disadvantage: data.
For the upcoming 2017 Porsche vehicles, there is a massive improvement to the Porsche Communication Management (PCM), the automaker's proprietary infotainment/navigation system. Here, Apple CarPlay is finally integrated because Google supposedly demands certain pieces of data such as vehicle speed, throttle position, coolant and oil temp, engine revs in an agreement for the Android Auto use, according to Motor Trend.
Porsche is reportedly wary about sharing information about the vehicle not just because of ethical considerations, but also because of the need to keep it secret. Otherwise, it will jeopardize the company's capability to ensure that their vehicles remain unique and special. Apple's solution proved to be aligned with Porsche's vision, as it only asks to know when the car is accelerating while the system is being used, Mac Rumors reported.
Google has disputed Porsche's claims that it collects data while defending Android Auto's data collection requirements, explaining that they are crucial in areas of security and in improving user experience.
"Users opt in to share information with Android Auto that improves their experience, so the system can be hands-free when in drive, and provide more accurate navigation through the car's GPS," Google told The Verge.
