Warning: The following contains possible spoilers for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
Daisy Ridley's Rey in the upcoming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has been the source of considerable speculation, particularly her parentage, for the last year now. But another area of Rey's character that fans seem to be hung up on is her staff.
In the teasers and most of the promotional material for the film, Rey can be seen wielding this weapon. In fact, one rumor suggests she's even quite deadly with it. But what is the weapon's origin?
Fans have been searching for deeper meaning in every little clip and picture J.J. Abrams, Disney and Lucasfilm have released for "The Force Awakens." Perhaps that is why a popular online theory has cropped up suggesting that Rey's possession is the staff of Darth Plagueis (the Master of Darth Sidious AKA The Emperor AKA Chancellor Palpatine). Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case.
"Rey doesn't own it or anything like it," Jason Ward, Editor-in-Chief of Making Star Wars, wrote. "From what I've heard, Rey has the staff because it is all she can afford. It is the common weapon of the scavenger types. Weapons are expensive and everything Rey has, from her house (inoperable AT-AT) to her speeder, are things she's found on Jakku's battlefield graveyards. Because of the time that has gone by since the Battle of Jakku, even the majority of guns she has managed to find aren't in actual working order. So Rey has a staff and there's nothing special about it."
Well, there you have it. While Rey herself may be special, it does not sound as if she has a special weapon. That certainly doesn't mean she couldn't come into possession of, say, a lightsaber down the road. But for now, it's just the boring old staff.
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will premiere on Dec. 18.
