For New York Giants tight end Daniel Fells, football is likely the last thing on his mind. Struck by MRSA, the Giants pass-catcher's focus has shifted from on the field to off. The presumption up until very recently had been that Fells would be able to recover fully and resume normal NFL activities at some point. But in the wake of a recent rumor that Fells was actually in danger of losing the foot in which the infection originated, comes another, much more dire report.
Per Jason Cole of Bleacher Report, the infection in Fells' foot isn't just threatening the foot itself - it's also threatening his life. In fact, according to Cole, doctors have advised Fells that they may have to amputate the foot in order to avoid what could become a potentially "life-threatening" blood infection.
This means that, in essence, Fells' professional football career is over. After seven NFL seasons, four franchises, 114 receptions, 1,334 yards and 12 touchdowns, Fells will "never play football again," per Cole's source, due to the fact that in attempting to fight the infection, doctors have already removed portions of his foot.
Fortunately, per Cole, Fells remains in "good shape" at this point and is in wait-and-see mode to determine whether the antibiotics he's currently on can fight off the infection.
