Joss Whedon has kept a low profile since his responsibilities to promote his Marvel film "Avengers: Age of Ultron" ended in May. His statements during that press tour revealed an artist tired of being controlled by studio overlords and five months later, Whedon is ready to take back creative control of his work.
"I'm looking to do is something new. Really something I haven't done before," Whedon told Headlines & Global News at The Paley Center for Media's Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog Reunion on Saturday. "The last five years I haven't created a universe."
Whedon has spent a majority of that last five years working under Marvel, directing the two "Avengers" movies and then getting the studio's first TV project, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." off the ground. He also filmed a retelling of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" in his home in only 12 days.
He admittedly has trouble taking a vacation (he spent his last four-month vacation writing the musical episode to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), but he's tried his best over the last few months.
"I'm experimenting with trying to have a life. It's not going very well," Whedon joked.
"Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" came together during the 2007-08 Writer's Guild of America strike and was released exclusively online in July 2008. The strike allowed Whedon bring together his troupe of actors - Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day - at a time when they would ordinarily be busy with other projects.
Barring another writer's strike, the stars would need to align to get everyone back together for a "Dr. Horrible" sequel (or any other project), but if anyone can do it, Whedon can.
"If I can make an 'Avengers' movie when all those people are making seven other movies at the same time, I can make 'Much Ado' when everyone was working, then yes, it can be done," Whedon said. "It's about passion and some very clever scheduling and timing. It's just about when can we all look each other in the eye and go, 'Okay, do we have enough energy with everything else we're doing to rock this as well?'"
Whedon hasn't announced his next project, but expect something entirely original.
