A Missouri man battled a fire in his field that got out of control when he was burning trash on Tuesday, and then used an unusual method in an attempt to put the fire out, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He drove his van, full of ammunition and a full tank of gas, over it as he tried to put out the fire. The van's tires caught fire and he had to leave the burning vehicle in the field and call for help.
A Clay County sheriff's deputy saw the thick black smoke in the distance during a routine traffic stop and headed to the scene to see what was going on. He found the van burning in the field with bullets exploding inside, said Jon Bazzano, a spokesman for the Clay County Sheriff's Office. The owner of the van was watching from a safe distance.
While the deputy did not yet cite the owner, the owner did not want a report as he did not feel his insurance would cover the loss, according to Autoblog.
"It seems like he's just going to have to take a loss on that vehicle, because I don't think they're going to cover it," Bazzano said, according to the Kansas City Star.
Liberty Fire Department responded to the call to ensure the fire did not spread.
