New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton could be the Miami Dolphins next head coach in 2016, and some in the league strongly believe it will happen, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
Rumors of Sean Payton being sought by the Miami Dolphins and the Indianapolis Colts have continued to surface the past couple days, but now the rumors have some believing this could actually happen. Payton denied reports about him leaving, but left a door open saying that if you look at the amount of annual reports about coaches' jobs, eventually one will be correct.
"Let's go back through it," said Payton, via Pro Football Talk. "A year ago there was a report from Peter King.... I think that happens when you're in year ten, I think, and you're not having success. There's this, 'Well, you know, is there another job he'd be interested in? So my point is if you predict that every year at some point someone's gonna be right, whether you retire or you finish or you're let go. I mean, I think that's just a little bit the nature of our game right now."
There are current people in the league that definitely think Payton will make the move to Miami during this upcoming offseason. The Saints are 1-4 this season, and their chances at turning this season around seem very slim. The Dolphins are 1-3, but they have a ton of talent, and are likely in need of great head coach.
For Payton to make the move, the Dolphins would be allowed to request permission to speak with Payton and sign him after the season. Before Miami gets permission to negotiate with Payton, the organizations would have to negotiate the terms of compensation if the Dolphins were able to hire him.
Payton could end up in Miami next season with quarterback Ryan Tannehill, but if there is a chance to coach Andrew Luck and the Colts next season, that might be a more appealing move.
