“Super Fun Night” was as advertised. It was super, fun and was aired at night. Here are three reason you should watch ABC’s new comedy:
No. 1—Rebel. Wilson.
If you’re trying to picture Rebel Wilson in her new show, imagine her character from “Pitch Perfect”, Fat Amy—just with an American accent and not as confident. Wilson’s character in “Super Fun Night”—Kimmie Boubier— still has the awkwardness, comedic personality and association with singing that Fat Amy did. Wilson, who created the show, is able to make Kimmie such an awkward and funny character that you might forget she works at a law firm. However, I must admit that I think Wilson is much funnier with the Australian accent.
No.2—The Underdog Gets an Early Win
In the series premiere Kendall Quinn (Kate Jenkinson) is a new attractive lawyer at the firm and is trying to get the attention of the boss’ son Richard Lovell (Kevin Bishop) who also works at the firm. It so happens that Richard is good friends with Kimmie and they have a weird relationship where it looks like their flirting but no one can tell if they like each other. Kimmie and her friends (along with Richard) decide to attend a piano bar where she joins a singing competition. Kimmie had asked Kendall to attend but she lied and said she wasn't available that night. This happens to work aginst the attractive lawyer because Richard, who was planning to ask her out, finds out she isn't available which frees him up for the singing competition. At the bar, just before Kimmie sings, she realizes that Kendall has gone before her in what seems to be a contest to get Richard’s attention. Kendall ultimately wins the competition but isn’t invited to have “consolation pizza” with Kimmie, her two friends Marika (Lauren Ash) and Helen-Alice (Liza Lapira) and Richard. Although the slim girl with the pretty face may have won the competition, it’s Kimmie who goes home with the guy (and technically her friends).
No. 3—Video Blog Format
There are a couple of shows on television that feature a girl who narrates the show on her computer through a video blog or regular blog. This is one of them. If you combine that format with Wilson’s comedic prowess, you’re in for a hilarious storytelling experience.
“Super Fun Night” airs Wednesday at 9:30/8:30c on ABC.
