To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the massively popular apocalyptic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, a limited edition Evangelion phone dubbed SH-M02-EVA20 will be released for fans.
The Evangelion phone is made by Sharp (the SH-M02 in the phone's name indicates the original Sharp handset, according to The Verge). It runs on Android and will cost a hefty $705. This is quite steep, especially when the specs only include a 1.2 Ghz Snapdragon processor and 2GB of RAM. They pale in comparison with flagship Android devices today, as a number of them carry lower price tags.
The phone, however, is expected to sell out quickly, as Sharp will only manufacture 30,000 units, and only 5,000 will be shipped by December. The bulk will roll out in April next year.
The SH-M02-EVA20 itself is heavily customized. The design features purple and green gradients, which serve as backdrops to the outline of a robot fighter. The device further assumes a truly Evangelion vibe once it slips into the case that resembles the anime's Unit-01 armor, noted Engadget. On the software side, there is the obligatory Evangelion skin that will feature system sound effects based on the anime characters as well as different wallpapers for each day of the year. The Evangelion phone will only be available in Japan, and buyers need to secure an application to purchase at 7-Eleven stores, according to an official announcement.
