Albuquerque Police Officer Shot, Critically Injured; Suspect Identified, In Custody

An eight-year Albuquerque Police Department veteran was critically injured Wednesday when he was shot multiple times during a routine traffic stop near a Walgreens at an intersection in the city, police officials say.

The shooter fled, evading police for several hours, prompting them to warn residents in the area of Central Avenue and Eubank Boulevard to remain indoors, reported ABC's Albuquerque affiliate KOAT. More than 100 officers from several agencies within the area were involved in the investigation and pursuit at one point following the shooting.

The injured officer, who remains unnamed, was rushed to University of New Mexico Hospital as the manhunt progressed, and underwent at least two surgeries.

"They are working diligently to save this officer's life," Police Chief Gorden Eden said, according to FOX News. "This is, for me, a terrible day ... I would ask that the city please pray for this officer, pray for his family."

Updates from the APD indicate he is still in critical condition.

Police soon captured the suspect and identified him as 34-year-old Davon Lymon. Police records indicate Lymon has an extensive crime history, including a murder charge dating from 2001, according to WPRI 12.

Investigators revealed they are also on the lookout for a woman believed to have been inside the vehicle with Lymon at the time of the shooting, but admit they don't consider her to be dangerous.
