It doesn't matter that David Ayer's "Suicide Squad" is filled to the brim with stone cold killer characters that are, for the most part, through and through bad guys. Just because they're super villains doesn't mean they don't have feelings.
According to recent comments from the writer/director and members of the cast, there is going to be a pretty fascinating love triangle between Will Smith's Deadshot, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Jared Leto's Joker. Those are three very unique and very deadly individuals, which should make for an interesting interpersonal conflict.
"Harley's the biggest troublemaker, but Deadshot's actually eyeballing her a little bit. There's a pretty ragged love triangle there," Smith revealed to ComicBookMovie.com.
It makes sense that Harley would want to branch out a bit in "Suicide Squad." Ayer admitted that her character is trying to become her own person separate from the Clown Prince of Crime. Plus, it's not as if the Joker is very good company all the time.
"It's about her breaking free of the Joker and becoming this fully actualized, independent person. That really is a metaphor for everyone's journey here," Ayer said.
This isn't exactly new territory for DC. Their "New 52" comic universe covered the same ground with Harley and Deadshot getting together to the displeasure of the Joker. It sounds as if the same storyline will play out in "Suicide Squad" which will draw clear battle lines between the characters.
However, Warner Bros. is not a foolish studio. They know they can't make Will Smith into an unredeemable killer. As a result, Deadshot is apparently trying to do right by his family when we first meet him in the film.
"As the movie opens, he has a really big career score. He's looking to turn over a new leaf with his daughter after the hit, but it goes wrong. It goes terribly, terribly wrong. And it lands him in Belle Reve for life," Smith revealed.
Sounds like compelling character drama to us.
"Suicide Squad" will hit theaters on Aug. 5, 2016.
