When Wendy found herself dog-less for the first time in a long time, after losing her two older dogs, her heart opened wide when she saw a story in People. It showcased two shelter dogs, moments away from euthanasia but saved when they quickly hugged each other in a last-minute loving moment between the two who shared the same run at the high-kill shelter. It was a moment caught in a photo that literally saved their lives.
The hugging dog's story was told earlier this year by HNGN.
"It just fell together," Wendy explained, about why she and friend Pam fell for Kala and Keira. "We turned our tears into smiles with these two young, playful dogs."
Hound mix Kala and boxer mix Keira's times were up in July and they hit the dreaded euthanasia list, like millions of animals languishing in shelters each year. But the heart-wrenching photo of the two embracing was posted on the shelter's Facebook page and received national attention from all of the social media animal lovers. Angels Among Us Pet Rescue in Alpharetta, Ga., quickly swooped in and took the pair, according to HLN.
Now enjoying the good life, Kala and Keira are sharing their happily-ever-after moment today.
Here is the photo that started it all. Can we say awwwww and yippeee?
