Rihanna Maori Tattoo (VIDEO): ‘Stay’ Singer Gets Tribal Ink on Hand with Chisel and Mallet

Rihanna added another tattoo to her growing collection. While in New Zealand for her "Diamonds World Tour" the 25-year-old singer decided to get a permanent reminder of the trip by getting a traditional Maori tattoo, the Daily Mail reports.

She got the tribal ink on her right stretching from her fingernails to the middle of her forearm. The intricate design of lines and symbols was done the traditional way with a chisel and mallet instead of a needle machine.

A two-minute video of the process was uploaded to YouTube and shows the tattoo artist literally chiseling pigment into her skin. The "Stay" singer grimaces a little bit but takes the pain like a champ, even using napkin to wipe away some of the blood on her knuckles.

Rihanna got the tattoo done at the Moko Ink Studio in West Auckland by Inia Taylor. Ta Moko tattoos were popular among the Maori people of New Zealand but fell off around the 19th century. Recently they have started to become popular again as a way for people to connect with New Zealand's culture.

Rihanna already has 19 other tattoos and admitted that she was addicted to getting inked, Stealherstyle.com reports.

"I like hanging out in tattoo shops," she said. "I am so intrigued by tattoos. It's an entire culture, and I study it. Sometimes I go with friends, or just by myself."

Her first tattoo was reportedly done in 2006 and it was two music notes on her foot.

"[Rihanna] always flips out [when it's done] and jumps up and down like a 16-year-old girl getting her first car," her tattoo artist Bang Bang said.

He has done 12 of Rihanna's tattoos including a large Egyptian falcon which now covers the music notes.
