Skippy Recall: Peanut Butter Might Contain Pieces Of Metal

Hormel Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread jars distributed in stores such as Target, Walmart and Publix located in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia were recalled recently for possible contamination with metal shavings.

Hormel recalled an estimated 1,871 pounds of the peanut butter. The 16.3-ounce jars have a expiration date of DEC1416LR1 with UPC package code of 37600-10500, according to CNBC. Spokesman for the company stated that the metal shavings got into the Skippy jars after a machine malfunction that has already been fixed.

If swallowed, these hazardous materials could result to severe health issues. These metal shavings or any other food contaminant as small as 7 mm (0.25 inch) could result in choking, airway obstruction, gastrointestinal perforation or secondary infection that might occur once the object has been ingested, according to Reuters.

Hormel stated it recalled these Skippy Peanut Butter jars to prevent further issues regarding the peanut butter and to protect its customers. Despite the setback in these seven states, Hormel's stock shares still managed to increase, ending at $67.83 on Wall Street, according to Inquisitr.

If a consumer has already purchased the product, they should return it where they bought it for an exchange, or contact Hormel Foods Customer Relations at 1-866-475-4779, according to the FDA.
