While there's plenty to enjoy about the cold season, it's arguably harder to keep the hair and skin in tiptop condition during the winter. The temperature dip can bring some dramatic changes as indoor heat and cold winds can make the skin and scalp dry out easily, according to Hello Magazine. To minimize the damage, every woman should know these beauty hacks to combat the weather of the season:
1) Beef up on the healthy fats.
Improve your diet by eating more eggs, avocado, peanuts and fish this season as they are rich sources of protein. Protein contains L-lysine and L-proline that helps create more collagen in your body. Your skin needs collagen to keep skin tissues healthier so that it doesn't dry out and develop wrinkles, according to Live Strong.
2) Hydrate a lot.
Most people tend to scale down on water drinking this season compared to hot summer months, but water promotes good circulation so you'll need to keep your intake regular. It will keep your skin from cracking or flaking and it will help reduce dark circles under the eyes, according to Pop Sugar.
3) Always deep condition your hair to combat the frizz.
This is especially true if you also use a hair dryer, curling iron or hair straightener on a regular basis as the colder weather will make your hair's condition even worse.
4) Don't forget to moisturize your skin, hands, feet and lips.
If possible, apply lotion while you're still in the shower so that the moisture can be sealed in and your skin stays softer longer. Keep an affordable body lotion among your beauty products, such as Nivea's In-Shower Nourishing Body Lotion. For the lips, Lucas Papaw ointment is great and economical to use, but you could also DIY a lip scrub using honey and sugar.
Just mix white or brown sugar with honey (or olive oil, coconut oil). Rub a small amount on your lips once a week (twice weekly if you're gentle, according to Everyday Roots). Let the mix sit on your lips for on minute before wiping off with a damp washcloth. Be sure to seal that soft kisser with some lip balm right after.
5) Invest in coconut oil to moisturize your face.
Coconut oil contains healthy acids and oxidants, as well as vitamin E that will keep the facial tissues soft and supple. "Coconut oil is known for being hydrating," said dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross, via Refinery29. "An oil's goal is the same as a moisturizer or cream - to moisturize. The difference is [that] the oil does not contain alcohols or silicones." However, some dermatologists also warn against use of coconut oil for acne prone skin. As its effective in trapping moisture under the skin, it could clog the pores and cause a breakout.
6) Keep applying sunscreen even when the weather is overcast.
