'Texas Flood Dog' Thor: California Police Find Missing Pit Bull 2,000 Miles From Home

Thor, a 16-month-old pit bull that disappeared following the May flooding in Central Texas earlier this year, was been found in California, over 2,000 miles from his home.

An officer found the wandering dog on Sept. 26, on the streets of Crescent City, Calif., about 20 miles from the Oregon border, reported the Los Angeles Times. A witness reportedly saw the pit bull hopping out of the back of a pickup truck, leaving authorities unsure whether Thor had jumped out of the truck without the driver's knowledge or was simply abandoned.

Thor, who was found slightly underweight with some slight fur loss and fleas, was taken to the Del Norte County Animal Shelter to be cleaned and fed. As they checked Thor into the facility, shelter workers noticed he was microchipped and was missing from home - more than 2,000 miles to the east.

"In this case, it was one of the rare situations where an animal was chipped and the information was correct," Del Norte County Animal Control director Justin Riggs said, according to The Dallas Morning News. "So we were able to get a hold of the owner pretty quickly."

One of his owners, Eddie Hurtado, was notified about Thor's location and revealed that Thor had run away after his family was forced to evacuate their San Marcos home when it was overwhelmed by the swelling Blanco River during storms over Memorial Day weekend.

Hurtado - and everyone else - have no idea how Thor managed to find his way to California, according to The Associated Press.

A California trucker volunteered to drive Thor back home, a trip that would have cost Thor's owners more than $1,000, and by Monday afternoon, the truck carrying Thor had crossed into Texas.

"We were just happy to see him go back to his family," said Riggs.
