Just four months after Amy Winehouse's documentary hit theaters, a biopic on the late singer's tragic life story is in development with Noomi Rapace in talks to play the lead role.
Rapace, best known for starring in the original "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" series of films, will play the soul singer, who died four years ago due to a lethal amount of alcohol at the age of 27.
The film titled "Amy Winehouse," will be written and directed by Irish filmmaker Kristen Sheridan, whose credits include "August Rush" and "In America," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Amy's music is felt so deeply by the audience, because it was deeply personal. Her vulnerability was her strength. She was called many things - a diva, a lost soul preyed upon by tabloids, a tortured genius; our aim is an innovative, emotional and life-affirming approach as we go through the looking glass into her life and art," said Sheridan, according to Variety.
CAA and UTA are providing finances for the project and will be co-representing the domestic rights. City Entertainment's Maurer and Alixandre Witlin and Subotica's Tristan Orpen Lynch will produce the biopic, with Lotus Entertainment's Jim Seibel, Bill Johnson, Ara Keshishian and Angus Sutherland on board as executive producers.
Amy Winehouse's father, as well as estate executor Mitch Winehouse, who publicly criticized the "Amy" documentary, are in talks with producers of the film to lend his late daughter's music to the feature film.
