From "Kiss-ass" to "The Little Mermaid." Actress Chloe Grace Moretz has signed on to star in Working Title and Universal's upcoming live-action adaptation of "The Little Mermaid."
The 18-year-old "If I Stay" actress took to her Instagram and Twitter account to confirm the news and shared with fans her excitement about taking on the iconic role of Ariel.
"Here it is!! I've been waiting months to tell everyone how excited I am to take on this beautiful journey with Working Title, Universal, and a beautiful script by Richard Curtis..#TheLittleMermaid !!!! Here we go!!!" she wrote alongside a screenshot of an article from Variety, who first reported the story.
Richard Curtis, whose credit includes "Love Actually" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral," is close to inking a deal to write the script for the film, which is based on the classic tale from Hans Christian Andersen, Variety reported.
The fairy-tale follows "a mermaid who gives up her life in the sea after she falls in love with a prince," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The website added that "not much is known about how this version will compare to previous versions of Hans Christian Anderson's story."
The Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce the film. Universal executives Erik Baiers and Chloe Yellin will oversee the project for the studio.
The live-action film, which was announced last March, is still searching for a director after Sofia Coppola left the project in June because of creative differences with the studios. However, some insiders told Variety that Coppola left the film because she did not want to work with Moretz, who had been the frontrunner for the role even while Coppola was still attached to the project.
Moretz is busy filming the studio's sequel "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" and just wrapped "Brain on Fire." She next stars in Sony's "The Fifth Wave," which will be released Jan. 15, 2016.
No release date for "The Little Mermaid" has been announced.
