Starbucks revealed the design for its 2015 holiday to-go cups earlier this month and the removal of winter-themed images like snowflakes and snowmen had Christian evangelists up in arms, as previously reported by HNGN. Candace Cameron Bure, "Fuller House" star and "The View" co-host, took to social media to defend the coffee company and 2016 presidential candidate Donald Trump suggested a Starbucks boycott.
"It's a red cup, folks," Bure wrote in a caption on Instagram on Monday, along with a shot of the new holiday cups. "Until Starbucks puts a baby Jesus or nativity scene on the cup while saying Merry Christmas, then pulls it because they say it's offensive, let's talk. I don't remember Starbucks ever being a Christian company, do you?"
Bure, who will star in the upcoming Hallmark Channel's original movie "A Christmas Detour," went on to explain that Santa Claus, holly, jingle bells and other Christmas-themed imagery don't define the holiday for her as a Christian.
Meanwhile, Trump addressed the Starbucks' "war on Christmas" during a rally on Monday night in Springfield, Ill., and when he suggested a boycott of the company, his followers cheered in agreement.
"If I become president, we're all going to be saying 'Merry Christmas' again, that I can tell you," Trump said, according to CNN.
Starbucks released a press release to explain the new cup design, which is intended to act as a "blank canvas" for customers to draw their own images.
"In the past, we have told stories with our holiday cups designs," Jeffrey Fields, Starbucks vice president of Design and Content, said in the press release. "This year we wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories."
