Fox Announces Winter Schedule: 'American Idol' Farewell Season, 'The X-Files' Revival And All-Comedy Tuesdays

Fox has packed its winter premiere schedule with new comedies, the much anticipated return of "The X-Files" and a final goodbye to "American Idol."

The network will kick off 2016 with a new Sunday night comedy lineup on Jan. 3 that will include the premiere of live-action comedy "Cooper Barrett's Guide to Surviving Life" (8:30 p.m.) and animated series, "Bordertown" (9:30 p.m.). The third season of "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" will relocate to Tuesdays on Jan. 5 at 9 p.m. alongside "New Girl," which will premiere its fifth season at 8 p.m.

"The X-Files" reboot will debut with a special two-night event beginning on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 10 p.m. following the NFC Championship game. The six-episode event series will continue in its regular timeslot on Monday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m.

Host Ryan Seacrest and judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. will start their final search for the next "American Idol" with a special two-night, four-hour premiere event Wednesday, Jan. 6 (8-10 p.m.) and Thursday, Jan. 7 (8-10 p.m.).

New drama "Second Chance" (formerly known as "Lookinglass" and "The Frankenstein Code") will debut on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 9 p.m. after the second week of "American Idol." The Tom Ellis-starrer "Lucifer" will premiere on Monday, Jan. 25 at 9 p.m.

The Kal Penn-hosted reality competition series, "Superhuman," which tests the extraordinary skills of 12 contestants, will premiere on Monday, Jan. 4.

"Sleepy Hollow" will move to Fridays when it returns on Feb. 5 while "Gotham" will return to Mondays on Feb. 29 after "The X-Files" finishes. Other spring return dates include "Rosewood" on Wednesday, March 2 and "Empire" on Wednesday, March 30. Fox will announce the return dates of "Bones" and "The Last Man on Earth" at a later date.
