Aziz Ansari is currently on a press tour for his new Netflix series "Master of None," and he has been open about the lack of diversity on television. His new show explores the same issues, and the actor has no problem getting candid about the topic. Last night, the comedian called out Stephen Colbert on "The Late Show" for the lack of diversity on CBS, the network that hosts the late-night show.
"Stephen's the first late night host from South Carolina," said Ansari, also a native South Carolinian. "And the bajillionth white guy."
Colbert then asked the former "Parks and Recreation" star if him being on the show counted as providing diverse late-night TV.
"Yeah, it's really diverse right now. It's 50 percent diverse!" he said, laughing. "This is like an all-time high for CBS!"
After the callout, Colbert looked straight into the camera and shook Ansari's hand. "Hey, I'm doing my part. I do what I can," Colbert said.
Later in the segment as Colbert was going through Ansari's resume, which included two sold-out standup comedy shows at Madison Square Garden, the late-night host mistakenly referred to Ansari's best-selling book "Modern Romance" as "Modern Love." The pair joked at the error and laughed that someone was going to get fired.
"God, I hope it's a white guy," Colbert said, before adding, "Chances are ..."
"There are a lot of white guys back there," responded Ansari.
