Nathaniel Marston, who played Michael McBain on the ABC soap, "One Life to Live," died Wednesday at the age of 40. Marston's mother, Elizabeth Jackson, confirmed the news of his death on Facebook.
"Dear family and friends, it is with a heavy heart that I share this devastating news," she wrote on Facebook. "My beloved and cherished son, Nathaniel Marston, who was putting up the good fight until last night was not able to continue due to the traumatic and devastating nature of his injuries. Nathaniel passed away peacefully as I held him in my arms."
The actor's mother revealed that her son passed away at 3:15 p.m. PST in Reno, Nev., with his father William, "second Mommy Lisa," and a family friend named Charlotte by his bedside.
Marston suffered a broken back and broken neck, among other injuries, after being involved in a car accident near Reno on Oct. 30. The accident reportedly left the actor paralyzed from the neck down, according to the Wrap. Marston was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of his accident.
Hours before his death, Entertainment Tonight reported that Marston was in "critical condition, but fighting pneumonia, a heart infection and irregular pulse." It was also reported that Marston would probably have to "live out his life as a quadriplegic."
"His injuries, which (doctors) did their best to heal, were not responding to treatment, and one after another his bodily functions failed to support his life. Had Nathaniel lived, he would have required a ventilator and would never have been able to utter one more word and would have been sentenced to life as a quadriplegic. A condition that Nate would have never have been able to tolerate," Marston's mother wrote.
"By God's love and mercy, Nathaniel was spared this living hell and has traveled on to be with God, his cherished grandmother Mary Jackson, grandfather John Jackson and my sister, his Aunt Nora."
As for funeral arrangements, Jackson shared on Facebook that a memorial service for her son would be held in New York City, Kauai, Hawaii and Gerlach, Nev., adding, "As soon as dates for these services are known they will be posted."
Marston is best known for his portrayal of Michael McBain on "One Life to Live" during a six-year stint on the ABC soap opera. He left the show in 2007. He also played Eddie Silva on "As the World Turns," and guest starred on "Castle," "White Collar" and "Blue Bloods."
Marston is also survived by his wife, Rita.
