The Google Nexus 5 is expected to debut sometime this month and will likely come with the highly anticipated update to the Android operating system, Android 4.4 KitKat. According to new rumors, the release date is set at either next week on Oct. 15 or soon after on Oct. 28.
According to CNET, the news comes from "whispers around the campfire" at Google Launchpad, a two week long-event that is run by the Big G for helping small startups develop their business. Several hints from sources at the event put the launch date on Oct. 15. At the event, developers have been served Key Lime Pie, the planned name for the next update. They have also been served KitKat bars, which lent their name to the software update recently at the last minute before the launch.
It's possible that this is all just rumor and speculation as no press event has been scheduled for Oct. 15.
Meanwhile Engadget is taking a look at some possible puzzles that might be being used to tease the launch of Android 4.4 KitKat. Nestle's @KitKat Twitter accound has posted two musical references to their page that suggest the OS could appear on Oct. 28. The first reference is "everybody dance now," a reference to the C+C Music Factory, originally known as the 28th Street Crew.
The second hint came in the form of an allusion to Michael Jackson's "This Is It" film, which released to stores on Oct. 28th. The site notes that there are a few reasons to doubt these allusions. C+C Music Factory released its "Gonna Make You Sweat" single on Oct. 18th and the album version of This is It reached U.S. stores on the 26th. In other words, if these tweets are teasers of any kind, they aren't blatantly obvious.
One thing that might lend credence to these rumors is the fact that Android's 4.2 and Nexus 4 release anniversaries was on Oct. 29.
