Apple has won the approval of the Cupertino City Council on Tuesday to move ahead with plans to create a new headquarters inspired by the design of a spaceship.
The Cupertino Calif.-based company presented a 3D model of the proposed campus to the city council, which reportedly unanimously approved its planning and construction over the next two years. The announcement comes 2 years after the late founder Steve Jobs originally announced the construction plans at a town hall meeting in June of 2011, according to Mashable.
"Steve transformed Apple into one of the most innovative companies in the world and we understand the responsibilities that come from carrying his legacy forward with this project," Apple's head of real estate and facilities Dan Whisenhunt told the council via Mercury News. "We've designed it with the same care and attention to detail as we do with all Apple products."
Last week the San Jose publication revealed a first look at the 3D model of the new proposed campus. The site published a video that gets more in depth with the deign, featured below.
The new design will sport a new facility that is exposed to the public with a dark colored roof with solar panels, a corporate auditorium, additional parking and a jogging path. Images also include a 45,000 square foot fitness center.
The town voted to allow the company to build a new headquarters largely because they feared that if they refused, Apple would simply move its headquarters, and business elsewhere. This angered many residents.
"As my mom used to say, 'don't bite the hand that feeds you,'" longtime resident Carol Baker told the council. "If we don't honor Apple with this building, they'll leave. There's no reason for them to stay here and be loyal to a community that doesn't support them. But if they left, it would be a disaster for the city."
The building is slated for completion in 2015 or 2016. Take a look at the design and tell us what you think. Are you excited to see the facility up and running? Perhaps you have a gripe or two with Apple's design or plan. Comment and share your thoughts with us below.
