The Nov. 14 episode of "Saturday Night Live" started off a little differently than usual. The late night comedy show replaced its cold open sketch with a touching tribute from cast member Cecily Strong to the victims of the Paris terror attacks.
"Paris is the city of light," Strong said onstage. "And here in New York, we know that light will never go out. Our love and support is with everyone there tonight, we stand with you."
She then repeated the same message in French before adding the show's famous catchphrase, "Live from New York, it's Saturday night."
This was not the first time the show paid tribute to a horrible event in such a moving way, according to MTV. In 2001 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Mayor Rudy Giuliani and New York City firefighters and police officers joined Paul Simon on the "Saturday Night Live" stage in singing his hit song, "The Boxer."
After the somber opening, the most recent show moved on with help from the host for the week, Elizabeth Banks. The musical guest was Disclosure, who were joined onstage by Sam Smith and Lorde.
"Saturday Night Live" returns next with host, Matthew McConaughey, and musical guest, Adele.
