HBO celebrated Latin music and its influence in American culture in a new documentary titled, "The Latin Explosion: A New America." The documentary premiered Nov. 16 and features interviews with Latin actors, actresses and pop stars, the Washington Post reported.
Tommy Mottola serves as executive producer on the film and can speak about the success that Latino stars have had in the music industry from his days as the head of Sony Music. While working at Sony, Mottola helped to shape the careers of Gloria Estefan, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez while working alongside other Latin music greats like Marc Anthony and Ricky Martin. Mottola is also married to Mexican singer and actress Thalía.
Mattola explains that HBO allowed him to have a platform to tell the history of Latin culture and music in America during a crucial moment, as Latinos and immigration have become a hot-button issue during the 2016 presidential debates.
"Latinos are really important right now - people are paying attention," Mottola told the Miami Herald. "It's very topical for a million reasons. I try to keep it entertaining by telling the story through music ... in a way people would be able to digest it."
Columbian-American comedian and actor John Leguizamo narrates the film, which features interviews with Martin, Lopez, Shakira, Estefan, Anthony and Thalía, according to HBO. Additional interviews include actresses Eva Longoria and Sofía Vergara and artists Pitbull and Romeo Santos.
"The Latin Explosion: A New America" is set for release on Monday, Nov. 16 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
