This Tuesday, a Florida high school student's selfie went viral on Twitter, featuring a teen grinning gleefully for the camera while his pregnant teacher suffered contractions in the background.
When asked by Local10 what he was thinking, the student said that he wanted "to capture the memorable moment for himself and her," calling her a "great teacher."
The selfie, taken by Coral Springs junior Malik Whiter, quickly became a hit and has been retweeted more than 23,000 times, captioned, "selfie with my teacher while she having contractions." The student told Local10 that he was very surprised by all of the attention his photo has received, as he did not expect it to become so popular.
When someone on Twitter asked him, "Is she really going into labor?!", Whiter responded, "Yeesss lmfao."
As it turns out, Malik's teacher, Susana Halleck, was not in fact going into labor, as she is not due until December, according to the Miami New Times. Her contractions began in the middle of class, and in the photo that Malik "bombed," she was on the phone with her mother assuring her that she was fine. Halleck was transported to the hospital but did not give birth, and returned back to school on Thursday.
Some people questioned the integrity of Malik posting the photo while his teacher was in distress, while others found the antic hilarious.
The selfie has even prompted a new meme on Gawker, in which Malik's grinning face has been photoshopped onto the foreground of various serious events, from the sinking of the Titanic to scenes of police brutality, a man caught on fire and even Jesus Christ on the cross.
