'Hunger Games: Mockingjay 2' Box Office Opening Hits Franchise Low Of $101M

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2," the last film in the "Hunger Games" franchise dominated the weekend box office earning an estimated $101 million domestically. However, the film, starring Jennifer Lawrence, marked the lowest opening for any of the films in the sci-fiction series, according to CNN.

"'Hunger Games: Mockingjay 2's' box office collection goes down as the year's fifth-biggest opening, but failed to meet its projected $120 million on its opening weekend in theaters. The film fell short of the franchise highest $158.1 million set by 2013's 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,'" according to Variety.

"It's a phenomenal opening and we launched these movies at this time consciously knowing there'd be a lucrative long run way through the holidays," said David Spitz, domestic distribution chief of the studio behind the film, Lionsgate.

"Spectre" came in at second place this week, raking in $14.6 million in its third week, taking the James Bond spy thriller's North American total to $153.7 million. "The Peanuts Movie" earned an estimated $12.8 million for 20th Century Fox over the weekend.

Seth Rogen's holiday comedy "The Night Before" bombed at the box office, finishing fourth with an estimated $10.1 million in earnings, followed by Julia Roberts' thriller "Secret In Their Eyes" with a collection of $6.6 million, according to IGN.
