Samsung's Gear VR, the first consumer virtual reality device for the Oculus Rift platform, began rolling out Friday. Early birds were able to pre-order the device as early as Nov. 11, according to a previous HNGN report. For those who have received their devices already, the question is whether there is already available content for the VR headset. The answer is yes. As a matter of fact, a virtual reality game called "Gunjack" was launched the very day the Gear VR hit the market.
Gunjack is published by CCP and is powered by Unreal Engine 4. "Paired with the Samsung Gear VR, this allows stunning visuals, dazzling clarity and panoramic views of the action occuring in space around the player," CCP said when Gunjack was first announced.
The game is classified as an arcade shooter and is set in the EVE: Online universe. The player assumes the role of a gun turret operator, and the goal is to eliminate pirates attacking the mothership. Watch the game trailer below:
"Gunjack" is just one of the two games that CCP is developing for the virtual reality platform. The company is also slated to release "Valkyrie," a dogfighting game simulator. "Gunjack" is differentiated from this title mainly because it is designed for mobile and, therefore, smaller in scale.
"We believe that virtual reality will be a defining element of gaming's future. It may take some time to get widespread adoption, but we're going to be there on day one," Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP, told Road to VR. "We're making smart investments in VR so we can learn important lessons early and blow people's minds when they get their hands on their first VR headset."
Gunjack is now available at the Oculus store for $10.
