Netflix Movies: Streaming Service Looking To Get Into Original Films, Will It Start With Arrested Development Movie?

Netflix has taken some big steps forward into he realm of original television programming with provocative series such as House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and Arrested Development Season 4. Now it seems the video streaming service is actively looking to throw its hat into the world of full-length movies as well.

It comes as no surprise for the company following the success of its forays into television. During its quarterly conference call with analysts on Tuesday, Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said that the company is "actively looking at documentaries," but says that he is keeping his mind "wide open" to other genres, according to Deadline.

This would certainly provide an interesting shot at the typical theatrical release, home video release and streaming release that films have typically gone through. This would skip most of the steps and put a new film out for free Netflix's streaming service.

Many speculate that, given the company's existing relationship with show creator Mitch Hurwitz that perhaps the first original film to make its way to Netflix will be the long awaited Arrested Development Movie. The film has been in production limbo ever since the cancellation of the show from Fox. In fact, the fourth season of the show was originally meant to be the first act leading to the film. It would make logical sense for Netflix to run off of the success of Arrested Development Season 4 by following it up with a movie. However, this might shoot any other plans for a fifth season in the foot, so it's all up in the air at this point.

However, Lucille Bluth herself, Jessica Walters, indicated that Netflix was in fact discussing the prospect of producing the film during her time at the recent Comic-Con interview with IGN.
