Motorola seems to have done it again. In a partnership with Verizon, the maker of the iconic Motorola Razr has released the Droid Turbo 2, the world's first device equipped with what the company states is a shatterproof screen, according to CNN Money.
Rick Osterloh, president of Motorola, believes breakable screens must be a thing of the past.
"People take it for granted that screens on phones would break. Our big realization was that we shouldn't accept that," he said.
Constructed of five distinct shock absorbent layers (none of which are glass), the Droid Turbo 2's screen is an engineering marvel.
"We spent three years to do the research and development on this," said Osterloh. "It was really hard, and it took some terrific engineering work," Osterloh said.
According to Motorola, 37 percent of smartphone owners have cracked their phone's screen at one point. In fact, it's now estimated that a phone screen cracks every two seconds in the U.S.
With the arrival of the Droid Turbo 2, however, the smartphone game is changing to one centered on the issue of durability.
The Droid 2 Turbo is set to go on sale on Thursday for $624, exclusively on Verizon's network. The device runs Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 processor with 2.0 GHz Octa-core CPUs and is backed up by a hefty 3 GB of RAM, reports The Examiner.
