The Pentagon has confirmed that one of Islamic State's prominent leaders in Libya, Wissam Najm Abd Zayd al-Zubaydi, otherwise known as Abu Nabil, has been killed in a U.S. airstrike in a compound in the eastern city of Derna on Nov. 13, according to Reuters.
Navy Captain Jeff Davis, a Pentagon official, confirmed the kill on Monday, though Nabil's death had already been alleged by the U.S. military immediately after the attack.
"Nabil's death will degrade ISIL's ability to meet the group's objectives in Libya, including recruiting new ISIL members, establishing bases in Libya, and planning external attacks on the United States," a Pentagon spokesperson said, according to The Independent.
The airstrike that ultimately killed Nabil had been authorized before a wave of terror attacks hit Paris on the same day, according to U.S. officials. The Paris attacks, which took more than a hundred innocent lives, was claimed by ISIS.
Nabil is not the only ISIL leader who had fallen lately, however. The Pentagon stated just last Wednesday that a senior al-Shabab leader, Abdirahman Sandhere, also known as Ukash, had been killed in an air strike in Somalia.
Al-Shabab is known as an extremist group closely associated with ISIS, reported BBC News.
