International Animal Rights Day: Give Animals Right To Respected Life

It's both National and International Animal Rights Day! But what exactly is the purpose of this special day? As supposed higher beings, it is our role as humans to enact a kindness towards all living creatures. Our behavior with animals is a reflection on ourselves as people. Kinder, gentler humans are needed in this world, make sure you are one of them.

International Animal Rights Day (IARD) is an opportunity to remind us humans that every creature on the planet deserves equal kindness and respect. Vivisections, abuse, factory farming, poaching, puppy mills, exploitation and research all produce a miserable existence for animals, and our role is to recognize the rights to coexist peacefully with animals.

This year's headlines have brought into light some harsh realities that make it impossible to say we "didn't know." From Cecil the Lion's tragic death, to the slaughter of hundreds of elephants and rhinos daily just for their horns, the U.S. are starting as a nation to move in a positive direction, albeit at a snail's pace, but progress is long overdue and appreciated.

Highlights this year have included both Jon and Tracey Stewart and Broken Hope guitarist Jeremy Wagner donating their farms to nonprofit charities they work closely with already. What a generous spirit these celebrities have!

Hawaii has made the move to become the first state to ban the use of wild animals in performances. Circus and fairs are no longer welcome to include wild animals in their acts. The cruelty to these majestic creatures being beaten down to perform is well documented, and Hawaii has said enough.

Also noted is the announcement that many of the nation's big fast food companies setting a timeline on when they will be 100 percent cage-free on the eggs they serve. This historic movement has forced the hand of the big factory farms to set their own timelines on cage-free existence for the chickens, too. The movement is a huge push towards a gentler life for animals.

Another big step was Phoenix, Ariz., announcing that they will no longer sell puppies at shopping malls. All of the pet stores will now only house and offer adoptables with local rescues and animal shelters. This is a huge step for the animal rescue industry and a kick in the pants to puppy mills.

Simple steps we can make all make to do our part include moving to vegan, of course, but if that isn't an option, pick up only cage-free eggs and hormone free, antibiotic free meat to make sure you are shopping wisely for both yourself and the animals. Know which companies test on animals and only purchase your hair care, cosmetics, cleaning products and skin care with companies that have pledged to not test on animals. The back label should state "not tested on animals." It's a start, and something we can all do incorporate into our lives to make this planet a kinder, gentler, more aware one.
