LG has officially unveiled the long awaited G Flex smartphone with a flexible display screen. The device will go head-to-head with Samsung's Galaxy Round device that curves to fit the contours of the human hand. The G Flex takes a slightly different approach by curving on the opposite axis in order to fit the human face to make calls better.
The device is powered by Android with a flexible OLED screen that is 6-inches with a 13-megapixel rear camera. Now, with the official unveiling, we know what to expect from the smartphone when it launches next month.
According to reports from Endgadget, the LG G Flex will include a 720p display, a 2.26 GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM 8974 chip (the same found in the recently released G2), 2Gb of Ram, Rear Key hardware buttons and a curved 3,500 mAh battery to match the handset. The G Flex also features a "self healing" coating on the rear case, which the company says, "has the ability to recover from the daily wear-and-ear scratches and nicks."
According to the company, the curved design enhances voice and sound quality while making phone calls. The microphone is closer to the users' face and provices an "IMAX-like experience" when viewing content in landscape mode, not to mention it fits significantly more comfortably in people's pocket, particularly the back pocket as IGN points out.
The G Flex uses Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and a number of unique software tweaks carried over from the G2. For example, the tap-to-wake KnockOn features as well as the new options like Dual Window, which is essentially LG's version of the Samsung MultiWindow view.
The device will launch in November in Korea with additional markets expected to be announced at a later time. There's not yet any word on how much the device will cost but more information is to come in the next few weeks.
