"Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag" is the open-world game fans have been waiting from the series since the first installment. This isn't to say those who came in between AC and AC4 fair worse (Brotherhood was a fantastic title), but it wasn't a secret many didn't care for AC3's story and gameplay.
However, "Black Flag" is arguably the redemption game of the series. With more than 80 hours of high seas open-world gameplay, and the biggest complaint I've seen is "too many eavesdropping missions," fans of the AC series will be satisfied with their purchase.

The Good: IGN gives AC4 an 8.5 out of 10
"The amazing world of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag has kept me gladly occupied for longer than any other game in the series, even though its story isn't the strongest. At no point in my dozens of hours was I ever at a loss for something to do. Simply sailing wherever the wind takes me and seeing what sort of trouble I can get into is a complete joy. Beyond the underwhelming main campaign, Black Flag delivers a world brimming with gorgeous places to go, amazing secrets to discover, and nefarious pirates to stab."
The Better: CVG rates AC4 a 9 out of 10
"The fact that ACIV is so good was by no means a foregone conclusion. There was a sense that, as the dust settled after ACIII, Ubisoft had missed a beat. Brows rightly furrowed as commentators pondered whether the series had already overshot its zenith. Much like the first Assassin's Creed, Black Flag isn't perfect. But the treasure trove of memorable experiences on offer here put all but the very best open worlds to shame."
The AWESOME: Gamespot is in awe of the Caribbean world AC4 creates, rating the game a 9 out of 10
"The world of Black Flag is nothing short of remarkable. This is the most expansive setting in the history of the franchise, a virtual rendition of the West Indies that encompasses all manner of burgeoning colonies, Mayan ruins, and deadly jungles. Cities like Havana and Nassau reflect the series' trademark attention to detail, from the stonework cathedrals of the former to the ramshackle taverns of the latter. Then there are the remote islands inhabited by nothing more than crabs and sea turtles, underwater shipwrecks waiting to be explored, and vast stretches of sparkling Caribbean waters that are every bit as deadly as they are gorgeous."
