Two toddlers were found in a storage unit in Northern California. On Friday, authorities found an abused 9-year-old girl at a home in Quincy and, upon further investigation, the case led the authorities to the storage unit. The girl was taken to a hospital.
"Further investigation ultimately led to the discovery of two deceased juveniles inside of a storage unit in the city of Redding," according to the police, USA Today reported.
Found inside the commercial storage unit in Redding city were a six-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl, who were both dead. The names of the children were not released. Homicide detectives are conducting an ongoing investigation and the autopsy will be performed on Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Thirty-nine-year-old Tami Joy Huntsman and 17-year-old Gonzalo Curiel from Quincy have been booked into the Plumas County Jail. The Redding Police Department charged them with felony child abuse, torture and mayhem. Their relationship with the girl is still unknown and their role in the deaths of the two toddlers in the storage unit has not been confirmed yet.
The nine-year-old girl was found on the floor of a locked vehicle outside the couple's home. She was immediately taken to the hospital and received medical treatment, undergoing surgery for five hours.
"She has and will continue to receive medical attention for serious injuries," Plumas County Sheriff Greg Hagwood said, according to NBC.
"This is a very fluid, complicated and ongoing case stemming from what appears to be a series of horrific acts," Plumas County District Attorney David Hollister said, according to KCCI Des Moines.
