The Van Wyck Expressway in New York City experienced major delays early Wednesday after a fatal car crash occurred involving a tractor trailer and a second vehicle, leaving one person dead.
Authorities say that the incident occurred on the southbound side of the expressway near Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens just before 5 a.m., reported NBC News. While they're aware of who were involved in the crash, the factors that led up to it are still unknown.
"One person was killed when a car slammed into the rear of a tractor-trailer," a statement said, according the Gothamist. The car's driver is believed to be the person who was killed.
Shortly after the crash, police closed off a portion of the highway between Union Turnpike and Jewel Avenue, causing traffic to be backed up all the way to the Long Island Expressway, according CBS New York.
Traffic is now slightly less congested, with police allowing traffic through one lane. However, motorists are encouraged to find an alternate means of getting to where they need to go, specifically the Grand Central Parkway.
