Dispute Leads To Shot Fired In Busy Wisconsin Mall, 1 Man Injured

A dispute at a large Wisconsin mall lead to gunfire Saturday. Thousands had scrambled from the mall and one man was left wounded in the leg on one of the busiest shopping days before Christmas. Police said that the East Towne Mall was kept under temporary lock down after the shooting just before 3 p.m.

"This is not an active shooter. This is not an act of terrorism," Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said.

Witnesses claim that the altercation occurred among several young men, among whom one had pulled out his hand-gun. DeSpain said that it could be possible that multiple shots may have been fired. A 19-year-old involved in the dispute was hit in the leg and was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury, according to The Chicago Tribune.

The East Towne Mall in Madison mentioned on its website that the Madison police were still looking for the suspect, The Washington Post reported,

The man who was struck in the leg worked at a mall kiosk and was hit by a bullet ricochet, but he wasn't injured. Shopper Evan Flood said that he saw a heated argument among 15 people, which led to a few punches being thrown, after which the gunfire erupted.

"Myself and a lot of other people just went into whatever store was nearest, and they did a real good job of putting the gate down and getting us into the back, where we waited until police showed up," Flood said.

"There were a lot of kids actually around ... and they were in tears and their parents were trying to get them to calm down, but they were crying the entire time," he added.

Police questioned the wounded man and numerous witnesses and also took surveillance video to determine who was involved in the dispute, according to CBS Minnesota.
