Even though it may be a slow recovery for Lamar Odom, he is definitely making some major improvements. The former NBA star has remained in the hospital ever since he was found unconscious at a Nevada brothel after a near fatal overdose Oct. 13 and, despite what they originally thought. due to the severe brain and kidney damage that he suffered, he is doing surprisingly well.
Odom had been moving with a walker up until this point, but on Thursday, he was able to walk without any assistance, taking three steps on his own and completely shocking doctors, sources told TMZ. He still has limited range of motion in his hands, but during a recent visit from his estranged wife Khloé Kardashian, he was able to put his own hood on, which is a huge improvement.
His brain function is even slowly improving and, recently, he was able to recognize a hospital staff member, which is a big deal because, at one point, he could not even recognize family. He will soon be moved to a rehab facility.
"He gets better a little bit every day," a source told Us Weekly. "He took a few steps without the walker. It's very slow and he's supposed to go to the rehab any day now."
Last month, Kardashian revealed to Ellen DeGeneres that Odom is completely unaware why he is even in the hospital or what caused the brain injury.
"We tell him that he had a brain injury, but we can't tell him how that brain injury was caused because that will set him back," she told the talk show host. "He never asks why he's here. He doesn't ask. He's really confused a lot — sometimes he knows who the president is and his birthday, and sometimes he thinks he's 26 and I say, 'I bet you wish you were 26. So do I!'"
While Odom may be moving to a rehab facility soon, sources say that when he is eventually released and able to go home, Kardashian apparently does not want him in her home, as HNGN previously reported. While she has been very clear that she will be there for him as much as possible throughout his recovery, there comes a time where she has to draw the line.
"Lamar can't stay at [the hospital] forever," said a source earlier this month. "He needs long-term care. His associates really would like for him to have a home health-care type of situation, but that may not be possible. Khloé has flat out refused to let Lamar move into her house. She doesn't want her house to be a hospital. She has been very clear about that.... Lamar's people want him to be in a quality care facility. But they are having trouble finding one that is secure and will provide him with the treatment he needs."
