Android might just have saved BlackBerry from completely going bust. The company announced recently that BlackBerry Priv, its first device to sport Android operating system, performed well after its release, selling out in Wal-Mart in less than a day, according to N4BB.
"The initial 30 days of sales has been quite positive," John Chen, BlackBerry's CEO told the Digital Trends. "I don't want to overhype things. It's an expensive phone."
There is no officially released sales figure and Chen refuses to give out information in this respect. However, he stated that at least 700,000 handsets were sold in the latest quarter and while this is less than the number sold in the previous quarter, BlackBerry has been selling much more expensive devices, particularly the Priv.
The better-than-expected Priv sales has been credited for BlackBerry's increase in revenue as well as its recent uptick in its share price, HNGN previously reported. Perhaps to capitalize on the positive market response, Chen also announced that the Priv will get a price cut in February next year. Chen did not specify the exact date but it would be around the time of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, according to Phone Arena.
The 5.4 inch Priv has so far earned positive reviews, particularly with its sliding display that hides a physical keyboard. It also sports the DTEK technology, which claims to provide a higher level of security for its users than other competing devices. The device, however, currently costs $699, which is more expensive than the iPhone 6S.
