Formula One driver Jenson Button has split up with his wife, Japanese-Argentine model Jessica Michibata, after being married for about a year, the McClaren driver's representative confirmed, according to BBC News.
The representative also said that the couple has separated on friendly terms. "Jenson and Jessica have decided to go their separate ways and it is very amicable," the spokesman said, before adding, "There is no-one else involved."
Button and Michibata got married in December last year in Hawaii. The F1 driver confirmed their marriage via Twitter on New Year's Eve last year. "Happy New Year from Mr & Mrs Button! We're excited to see in the New year with family and loved ones, we hope you're too!" he wrote at the time.
The couple met in 2008 in Tokyo, Japan and started dating eight months later, and like most relationships, they had their ups and downs, too. The pair broke up for a brief period in 2011 and then got back together before Button proposed to Michibata on Valentine’s Day, 2014, with a $250,000 ring, according to the Daily Mail.
In an interview earlier this year, the former F1 world champion revealed that Michibata spends most of her time in Tokyo, where she lives with her mother, while he lives in his Monaco bachelor pad.
“Jessie still works a lot in Japan. She enjoys her job, she models, she had a television show and has done a Japanese film,” said Button at the time, according to The Mirror.
“She enjoys working, which is great, but it obviously means that we don’t see each other very often,” he added.
