When it comes to cats, the trend of the past decade has been the bigger, the better. Think Maine Coons and Bengals. Think big fat cats. But just as the dog trend has gone to the tiny, teacup and pocket-sized, there are some cat breeds that are petite and perfectly suited for a small living quarter. Everyone loves kittens and wishes they would stay that small. Well, here are a few small cats, with a spotlight on the smallest breed.
Normal-sized housecats run around nine to 10 pounds. In the 10-lb. range, cat breeds like Abyssinian, Somali, American Curl and Bombay are great cats with social personalities, according to Graphiq. Bambino, Scottish Fold and Devon Rex cats are in the eight to nine-lb. range. The average size of the sweet-natured, low-maintenance Cornish Rex is just about six lbs.
But we go even smaller, meet the Minskin, a cross between a Munchkin and a Sphynx that weighs in around four lbs. when grown. Minskins are great family pets with a lower activity level and very minimal shedding, if ever, according to Catster.
The Minskin breed has just been recognized in the last decade, starting in 1998 and by 2005, there were 50 Minskins in existence. Minskins are seeking recognition from The International Cat Association (TICA).
Minskins have short legs like the Munchkin and a soft sparse coat like the Sphynx. Only the Minksin has soft fur "points" on the face, ears, legs and tail. Short and stocky built, the Minksin retains its kitten like appearance with a rounded head and large eyes. Totally adorable, that sweet, wide-eyed expression is hard to resist.
One thing to note about this gentle breed is that they are like living with little personal heaters. They seem to be warm to the touch and love to cuddle.
Small in stature and big on warm personality and love, this little cat is unique, petite and fabulous.
