Unprecedented severe weather has swept across much of the U.K., resulting in hundreds of homes in York being evacuated, according to The International Business Times. It's estimated that up to 3,500 homes and historical buildings could be at risk.
"The cost of the damage caused by this event will be considerable and if ever the evidence was needed that cities like Leeds must have the best possible comprehensive flood defenses, this is it," Leeds City Council Leader Judith Blake said, according to The Telegraph.
Leeds and Manchester are also suffering from these floods, and thousands of homes being evacuated as waters rise.
Blake went on to say that this flooding was a "catastrophe waiting to happen."
The government said Sunday that it would be sending 200 more soldiers to help people in the affected areas, BBC News reported. This is in addition to the 300 soldiers already on the ground.
Prime Minister David Cameron vowed to do "everything we can to help people in this, their hour of need."
There are more than 20 "severe" flood warnings across the U.K. "Severe" warnings mean that these conditions present real danger to human life.
Weather conditions have been better, BBC News noted. However, severe weather is on the horizon for Wednesday.
