Apple has already received a hefty sum from its biggest rival this holiday season, but the tech giant is asking for more. Just weeks after Samsung paid Apple $548 million for infringing iPhone patents and designs, Apple has upped the demand, stating in court papers last Wednesday that its rival must pay an additional $180 million in supplementary damages and interest, according to The International Business Times.
The additional damages corresponded to five Samsung devices that continued to infringe Apple's patents and were sold by the South Korean smartphone maker after a 2012 jury verdict determined that Samsung was liable for damages.
The Apple vs. Samsung trial has captivated the smartphone industry for a number of years already. It has also exposed the inner workings of two of the world's most secretive companies. The court ultimately ruled in favor of Apple, with the jury coming up with a reward of $1 billion, reports CNet.
After an appeal, however, Samsung eventually managed to reduce the amount to $548 million. Regardless of the reduction, Samsung has already appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, claiming that Apple has already been compensated far more than it deserved.
Despite the company's announcement that it was pursuing Samsung for more damages, Apple's stocks have continued to decline, trading at $108.03, down $0.58 or 0.53 percent on a volume of 13.6 million shares. The Cupertino giant's shares further went down in after-hour trading, declining $0.02 or 0.02 percent to $108.01, reports NASDAQ.
The relationship between Apple and Samsung is a complicated one, with Samsung being a longtime supplier of processors and screens for Apple's iPhones and iPads. Thus, despite the intense courtroom rivalry, the two companies are partners in other areas as well.
