A man distracted by his electronic device plummeted 60 feet to his death off Sunset Cliffs in San Diego on Friday.
The man, identified as Joshua M. Burwell from Sheridan, Ind., slipped and fell off the cliff at approximately 4:50 p.m. while staring into an electronic device such as a cell phone or camera, according to NBC San Diego.
"Witnesses stated seeing someone distracted by an electronic device and he just fell over the edge," said San Diego Lifeguard Bill Bender. "[He] wasn't watching where he was walking; he was looking down at the device in his hands."
Burwell's mother, Sharyle, wrote in a social media post that her son died while taking pictures and also mentioned that Joshua leaves behind a child, The Associated Press reported.
Three people climbed down to the bottom of the cliff and performed CPR on the 33-year-old in an attempt to save him but were unable to revive him, according to KABC-TV.
"Just like driving and using your cell phone, you don't want to be walking and using your cell phone," added Bender. "You don't want to be distracted by anything when you're in an area where you can be put at risk."
