Belgian authorities have arrested two people on suspicion of their connection to a plot to attack Brussels on New Years Eve, the Belgian federal prosecutors office said Tuesday.
A senior Belgian counter-terrorism official, speaking on the condition anonymity, said the plot was inspired, but not directed, by ISIS, reported CNN. Furthermore, there is no connection between those arrested and the Nov. 13 Paris attacks.
The arrests, which came on Sunday and Monday in the provinces of Brabant and Liege, were the result of a series of raids that have been launched throughout the country since the Paris attacks. The search didn't yield any guns or explosives, but authorities did find military-style clothing, computer equipment and ISIS propaganda material.
A total of six people were taken into custody during the raids, though four of them were later released after questioning, while the remaining two were hit with terror charges, reported the BBC.
The names of the suspects have not been released. One is expected to be charged with leading a terrorist organization and recruiting to commit terrorist offenses as author or co-author, while the other is expected to be charged as a participant in a terrorist organization, according to The New York Times.
So far, all that is known is that the alleged plot's goal was to attack several "emblematic sites" in Brussels during "the end of the year/New Year's celebrations."
No further details were released.
