The Marvel Cinematic Universe took its sweet time setting up individual characters before putting them all together in the mega crossover "Avengers" team up. Warner Bros. and DC, on the other hand, are rushing right to the finish line with the first of two planned "Justice League" films just two years away. Even though have yet to see the second entry in the DC Extended Universe (March's "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice") fans are already getting excited for the massive ensemble. But who will be leading the Justice League when the time comes? Ben Affleck, who will make his DCEU debut as Batman, has a few suggestions.
"Batman represents human beings, mortal men," he told Entertainment Weekly. "In a world of Flashes and Aquamen and Supermen, there needs to be that guy. It's interesting that he became the leader of the Justice League in the books - I'm not sure how that will play out here - but his humanity is also an asset."
The Justice League roster and its leaders has always been a revolving door of different characters, but the Dark Knight has typically orbited the top of the hierarchy over the years. Not only does his pay the bills for the entire operation, but, as Affleck mentions, he brings a unique perspective to the proceedings.
His humanity is indeed a separating factor as he begins "Dawn of Justice" fearing for the human race which leads him into his conflict with Kal-El. Though the two will reconcile eventually, it doesn't sound as if Batman will ever relinquish his belief that the human race needs protection. It's understandable how that conviction would lead him to spearhead the Justice League.
Perhaps we're jumping the gun a bit by discussing who should be leading the Justice League. After all, we've only seen one character in the DCEU so far. But it's fair to wonder what type of role the Caped Crusader will have in the League's formation and day-to-day operations. Everyone loves themselves some Batman.
