Us normal folk have to wait all the way until May to see "Captain America: Civil War," but those who work within the Marvel Cinematic Universe are a bit more fortunate.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" writer/director James Gunn was doing a Q&A on his Facebook page when someone asked what he thought of the upcoming "Doctor Strange" film (you can check out what we think of all the superhero movies coming in 2016). Since "Doctor Strange" is still early in filming, all he said was that he enjoyed the script. He did, however, admit that he was impressed with the latest efforts from directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
"I saw Civil War, and I think it's incredible," Gunn wrote. "It's one of the best Marvel movies ever, and I can't believe what a wonderful job the Russo Brothers did, and the cast."
That's high praise from someone whose own film is in the conversation for best Marvel movie ever. Admittedly, the trailer for "Civil War" looks great, but it's nice to hear that the finished product does as well.
The Russo Brothers first entered the MCU with the fantastic "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and will be taking over the "Avengers" series from Joss Whedon for the two-part "Infinity War" movies. Despite all this, Gunn brought up "Civil War" unprompted and went out of his way to compliment the film. While he's a company man, you just don't normally do that unless you really believe it.
The MCU launched in 2008 with "Iron Man," and although there have been some duds along the way ("Iron Man 2," "Thor: The Dark World," etc.), the overall quality of the shared cinematic universe has been top-notch. There's a reason why Warner Bros. and DC are playing catch-up to Marvel. Based on Gunn's comments, that trend is going to continue.
"Captain America: Civil War" will arrive on May 6, 2016.
