Steven Gerrard is ready to return to the club he spent 17 seasons with as a player. Gerrard wants to join Liverpool as a coach, and according to the Telegraph, he would have stayed with Liverpool if he were offered a coaching role before leaving for the MLS' L.A. Galaxy ahead of the 2015 season.
"What would have kept me at Liverpool into this season was the chance of shadowing Brendan Rodgers and his staff as well as playing. Those ideas were only mentioned to me after I had announced I was leaving," Gerrard said.
Gerrard doesn't expect to play after 2016, according to the Associated Press, and has been training with his former club during the MLS offseason. He spoke with Liverpool Manager Juergen Klopp about a future in coaching, according to the Telegraph.
"I have had a chat with Klopp. I haven't had an offer as such, but the club have let me know they are keen for me to come back but there hasn't been a conversation where they have said: 'We want you to do this, we want you to do that'," Gerrard said.
Gerrard scored 186 goals in 710 appearances over 17 seasons with Liverpool. Despite his success with Liverpool and internationally, there are things Gerrard would have done differently during his playing career, according to the Straits Times.
"I have regrets now that I didn't start my coaching badges at 21 or 22," Gerrard said. "All that time I have wasted in hotels being an England player in the afternoon when I have been bored. I wish I had done my C, B and A badges, so I would be doing my Pro License now."
Reports indicate there is a strong possibility Gerrard will be coaching sometime soon. His legacy with Liverpool makes it likely supporters would welcome him back in any capacity.
"I've dreams and aspirations of going into coaching and management but at the moment I'm nowhere near ready for management. When you start your coaching badges you realize pretty sharp it's different. You're in control of 25 men with different egos," Gerrard said to the Telegraph.
