It seems that Sony's aggressive strategy has finally paid off, as it announced at CES 2016 that it has sold 5.7 million PlayStation 4 units during the 2015 holiday season. This catapulted the cumulative figures of the console's sales to around 36 million as of Jan. 3, according to an official statement. This effectively made the PS4 the fastest-selling PlayStation variant ever, eclipsing the sales performance of the PS2.
"We are absolutely delighted that so many customers have selected PS4 as the best place to play throughout this holiday season and that the PS4 community is growing more than ever," said Andrew House, president and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, according to Digital Spy. "We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver innovative entertainment experiences, and look forward to bringing an unprecedented games portfolio from third party developers and publishers."
The impressive Christmas sales, which covered Nov. 22 to Jan. 3, are a bit surprising for some, given the fact that the platform saw a diminished number of releases this year as opposed to the number and diversity of exclusive titles launched for its rival platform, the Xbox One.
Aside from the holiday sales, Sony also revealed that it experienced an uptick in PlayStation Plus adoption. The service racked in 60 percent more subscribers, Trusted Reviews reported.
