Twitter will introduce a new feature that will let users tweet way beyond the current 140-character limit. Reports indicate that Twitter could allow as much as 10,000 characters and the change could roll out at the end of the first quarter of 2016. This came as no surprise for most since the microblogging site has already implemented this for its Direct Messaging product in August last year.
There is no official word yet confirming the new character limit, which is being touted as "Beyond 140." But it is purportedly seen within the company - particularly by its CEO Jack Dorsey - as a good thing, according to Forbes. As the Twitter universe exploded with the hashtag #Twitter10K, several tweets lamenting the imminent demise of brevity - which many believe is what makes Twitter unique - emerged, with many expressing desire for an "edit" feature instead.
Dorsey tweeted some thoughts defending the possible 10,000 character limit.
"We've spent a lot of time observing what people are doing on Twitter, and we see them taking screenshots of text and tweeting it," Dorsey said in his Twitter account. "Instead, what if that text... was actually text? Text that could be searched. Text that could be highlighted. That's more utility and power."
There is also a Buffer Social Media study that shows how more content, especially those with embedded rich media elements got 18 percent more clicks, 150 percent more retweets and 89 percent more likes, according to Forbes.
